Week 1 - Amélie Blandeau

'Hitchcock is a star'

The Space enlighten an authentic archive from the BBC. This video shows a twenty-minute interview led by Tony Bilbow and broadcast on the BBC in 1966, when Alfred H. was already known as the Master of Suspense.
The interview ends up like a lecture in which the Master teaches his students about modeling an actor with light, choosing the right 'Hitchcock woman', setting suspense, or using the humor of the macabre ('typically english').

Indeed, Alfred Hitchcock proves he has a genuine sense of humor that reminds us his British origins. But this interview also reveals an accurate point of view upon cinema as an aesthetic exercise and the film industry being a Hollywood business. Even though his positions may seem tough (such as his regard on actors) they appear to belong to an experienced wise man.

Want to learn a secret from Mister H. ? 'A nightmare has to be awfully vivid'. Only the frightening power of the ordinary can bring that 'Hitchcock suspense', only realism can make you tremble.

This document can be watched on The Space website, a newly opened platform of the British Arts Council that aims at broadcasting British Arts and Culture throughout the internet.
