Toys of Star Wars
Musée des arts décoratifs - Paris
Week 2 : Annaïck Guena
The Musée des arts décoratifs of Paris proposes, from October 4th 2012 to March 17th 2013, an exhibition about toys of Star Wars. The collector, Arnaud Grunberg, creator of the company ScienceFictionArchives.com, lends near 450 items and spin-off merchandise inspired of the Star Wars universe, collected since 1977.
The 300 000 french fans of the George Lucas's movies can see figures, dolls, costumes, masks, spacecrafts, soft toys, video games or comics about the saga. The museum explains the fabrication of toys with presentation of many prototypes. We can also see original wax sculptures, plaster molds and pictures.
Creating the Star Wars saga and items, George Lucas invites to dreams and imagination. It is why, he asked to the artists Greg and Tim Hildebrandt to realize an original painting, a poster of the first movie in 1977. This iconic image was the first view of a new creative world. In his time, Star Wars was a real graphic revolution. It was, and is, an inspiration for many artists like Tom Junk or Wojtek Siudmark.
In my point of view, after the exhibition "Game story, une histoire du jeu video" at the Grand Palais last year, this presentation of Star Wars universe is a consecration for the geek culture and science fiction. This "popular culture" meets, and maybe becomes, the "high culture" at the museum.
