Is Disney buying Lucasfilm a good decision?
In November, the
Walt Disney industry bought the LucasFilm Company, for 4,5 billions dollars,
which means Walt Disney gets back all franchises of LucasFilm’s past and future
productions. So, for past productions, it means that it will touch every
profits linked to drift products like toys, costumes, DVD, books. We can take
the example of Indiana Jones. On the
other side, for future productions, it means that Robert Iger, Walt Disney’s
boss, will make what he wants with sagas ‘series. For example, he considers produce
the 7th episode of Star Wars,
“one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time”. The question
we can put is about the originality of the cinematographic and cartoon production
if only one producer makes everything… what will happens for the creation’s
diversity? Today, Walt Disney owns Pixar Animations Studios (since 2006) so
governs the cartoon productions. He has also Marvel Entertainment (since 2009)
so produces all movies about comics and super heroes. With Star Wars, Indiana
Jones, Desperate Housewives or High School Musical (and more over than this
list…) Walt Disney calls out to a lot of kinds of audiences and makes much
money. But I think, even if what Walt Disney do can be interesting few times,
it’s important, for us and our children to have choice between more than one
kind of productions. For mind’s liberty and capacity to think and criticize.
