Suits as performance

   Mathilde Fourgeot : Week 6

Nick Cave is a complete artist. His work is a staggering mix between dance, sculpture and fashion. He’s asking himself: how can I bring this two disciplines together? This artist is renowned for one of his most famous work « Soundsuits ». These soundsuits are created with all kinds of material: buttons, twigs, plastic tabs, toys, hairs… The inspiration of Nick Cave comes from these objects.

Some of these soundsuits are just sculptures, which are exhibited all around the world in museums or galleries (at the moment we can say some of his works in Phantasia in Lille) and some others suits are wearable and are presented in motion, fully alive. They are worn by dancers (professional or not). The performance consists of the alchemy between the human and the soundsuit. The dancer prompts sounds thanks to his movements, to his dance. The soundsuit lives and become someone, or something… We don’t know. With his work Nick Cave wants to make people think. His works is magical in a way. His creatures are alive, they move, they dance, they meet them. He imagines stories or absurd situations. Whatever. The viewer is perplex and tries to understand: what is that exactly?  (200)
