Oreet Ashery, a trans artist - Justine Barnier - Week 6

Between biography, art and politics, Oreet Ashery questionnes human relationships and their paradoxes.
She was born in Jerusalem and she went to Europe when she had 19. Her work is marked by important social questions.
She is a transdisciplinary artist. With photography, drawing, performance, costume, she confronts social representations based in gender.
Often, in her works, she represents herself in male characters. She will draw her self-portrait disguised in Jewish men, in arab or black men, in a postman…
An anecdote clearly explains her approach : when she was child, she didn’t go to some neighborhoods of Jerusalem, who prohibit women.
She create a male double named Marcus Fisher. (Marcus or « mar - cus » signifies « Mister Vagina » in Hebrew, for the joke). She disguises herself as a man and she goes out, she takes pictures…
This « marcus » is a superficial envelope, used to breack social norms. Marcus is not a work, he is a revolt tool. She takes pictures of him and removes gender, politic and religious boundaries.
Her works transcribe political questions. Her art is an exploration of gender and religious identities.
She exhibits in large institutions, alternative places and public space. Her art is recognized internationally. Although her art is considered as something experimental, she work for social causes with associations.
